The Team Yukon concept was developed to facilitate the transition of Yukon swimmers to provincial, national and international levels of competition. While Yukon has a strong swimming history a natural distance barrier existed that made it difficult for aspiring athletes to make the move up the competitive ladder to Western Canadian, Junior Canadian, National, and International Championships.
The first steps for this transition took place in the early 1990’s with the preparation of strategic multi-year planning by Swim Yukon and the move by the Whitehorse Glacier Bears Swim Club to a full year training and competition schedule. Swim Yukon took the step of staffing a part time Sport Coordinator / Executive Director position and sub-contracting the Whitehorse Glacier Bears coach to act as the Head Coach of Team Yukon. The first realization of the Team Yukon concept was sending swimmers to the 1998 Canada Games. What was a single games effort has evolved into ongoing support for various games teams and high performance athletes representing Yukon across the country.
